So, for us, to lower the parking with discounting with discount zones and increase parking with premium zones, we hope to get that magic number of 85 percent of our parking occupied,” Hausladen said. When you’re not crowded, you’re charging too much. “When you’re too crowded, you’re not charging enough. Where there’s less demand, like in the areas of the Audubon Arts Center, Elm Street, and the Government Center at night, that would be a discount zone where the meters would cost less. Premium zones, would go up a quarter, with the idea that raising the costs would make parking easier, since drivers won’t stay there as long, and open more frequently. New Haven’s Parking and Transportation working group is looking at a three-year pilot program which would adjust meter prices every three months. Right now, to park at a meter in downtown New Haven costs $1.50 an hour. “Our goal is to have parking available for when you come to town, make sure it’s easy, convenient, and payable,” said Doug Hausladen of New Haven Transportation, Traffic and Parking. The Elm City thinks adjusting the prices you pay at the meter, specifically paying a little more to park in premium, in-demand spots, like those by the green or on Crown Street, will change that. You end up parking in a garage in no man’s land and walking all the way back,” said Kelly Stokes of Cheshire. “You can never find a spot on the street if you just want to stop for a minute to run in someplace. Spots by the green fill up quickly and free ones can be hard to come by. It takes forever, so normally I have to circle the block a couple of times before I can park,” said Allen Futrell of New Haven. “Every time I come down here I just can’t get a parking spot period. When it comes to feeding the meter, it turns out some parking spots in downtown New Haven eat a lot better than others. Parking spots in premium zones would go up a quarter, while other areas downtown, where the demand is less, would see the price drop. If you've got larger holes, such as from removing an electrical box, you need to fill it in with a small piece of drywall, tape it, finish it (with drywall finishing compound) and texture it. You can fill holes up to about one inch in diameter with spackling. Remember, we’re talking about spackling paste here, not drywall finishing compound. Of course, in those applications, one should have something stronger than just drywall, such as a rub rail to protect the wall. It really isn't as strong as standard spackling is. If it is applied in a case where furniture, carts, or furniture will bump into it, the spackling can crush faster and easier than standard spackling. Overall, lightweight spackling, by whatever brand, is far superior to standard spackling for interior drywall. These lightweight spacklings can also be textured by touching the still moist spackling with a finger. They are also quick drying, and sand quickly and easily. They don’t shrink as they’re drying, so they won’t crack. Since they are lightweight, they can be applied in one heavy coat, as opposed to layering multiple coats. So, if you have any large imperfections in the wall, you can pretty much count on having to apply several coats, delaying the completion of your project.įor interior walls, lightweight spacklings are a real advantage. Spackling pastes basically come in two varieties, standard and the newer lightweight spackling. I firmly believe that proper surface preparation is the most important part of any paint project. So, if all these rooms are so imperfect, I guess it’s a good thing we have spackling paste to fill in those holes, dings, and gouges in our walls. For me, every room I've ever painted has needed cleaning, caulking, spackling, and many times it even needed the trim to be repaired. I don’t know where that room is, but there must be at least one. Somewhere in the world, there’s a room that needs painting, which is so perfect, so well cared for, that there’s nothing to fix, nothing to caulk, not one single hole to spackle. ![]() For this reason, winter tires are best applied to all wheel positions.
